…But were afraid to ask. This is the title of this very interesting 34-slide presentation on Google prepared by FaberNovel, a french consulting firm. It is hard to realize the real nature of this just 10 years old giant given the number of services it has continuously released, updated (and sometimes shut down) or acquired.
This presentation gives a great overview of the company’s overall strategy and the reasons it has become what it is today.
It addresses some key questions about the company’s future, presented in the slide above: how Google won’t be affected by the crisis (not so sure about that if you consider their own stock update: the WSJ has a good article about the upcoming downturn), its relation with Microsoft and its advantages on Facebook, its footprint in the infrastructure and mobile world…
There is an interesting slide about how Google buys traffic through key partnership deals with software or hardware companies (slide 14) Many tend to think Google has free traffic or zero marketing costs which is a wrong assumption since it affects directly its P&L
For regular readers, most of this information will not be a surprise. But it is well organized and structured and gives some good prospective. I just wished the presentation was focusing a little more on the Giant’s weaknesses. A TechCrunch France reader funnily commented that, only the absence of electricty could stop them. What we do know on the web is that giants do not stay strong forever. The question is when will the wind change direction for Google?

It just occurred to me that it’d be useful to notify the readers of Six Revisions about articles I write for other sites in case you wanted to subject yourself to the torture of reading (even more) of my articles.
Starting today, I’ll be publishing Elsewhere on the Web, which will be short posts about articles I wrote somewhere else.
Today, Webdesigner Depot, a site focused on exploring various web and graphic design techniques, examples, and best practices for web designers, published “20 Excellent Free Rich-Text Editors“.
The article is a collection of some of the best rich-text editors (also known as online rich-text editors or online WYSIWYG editors). Rich-text editors can be used in various ways, such as adding a user option for inputting formatted text in an HTML textarea or editing certain parts of a web page.
I hope you enjoy the article!

Google Calendar now supports Apple iCal
Veröffentlicht von jowe, am 02.12.08blogs, syndication keine Kommentare »By David Besbris, Engineering Director
The Google Calendar team is proud to announce the public release of our support for the CalDAV protocol. You can now use Apple iCal with your Google Calendar, so you can work even when you’re offline, sync almost instantly, respond to invitations from others and see the free/busy data of your friends and coworkers.
We launched CalDAV support to our developers last July for feedback, and since that time a few of us whipped up a nifty setup program for iCal. This tool makes it a breeze to get iCal working with your Google account. We’ve released this as open source and the program is available for download at our Google Code site.

Veröffentlicht von jowe, am 02.12.08blogs, syndication keine Kommentare »No, this blog is not turning into a personal teenager diary. I’m just sharing Love For All, the latest work by FarFar for BjornBjorg, that i’ve found out via Brainstorm9.
I knew about the commercial before, but somehow i’ve missed the campaign site, where, after a few questions, i got myself involved with Martje, as you can see at this video.
The work has the usual outstanding production values (film, sound and art direction) and even a cheesy soundtrack selection. Although the photo customization could be more fine tuned (i’m a big fan of oddcast) it does a good job of showcasing the product while keeping the experience entertaining. If dating sites were this fun, i could even stop hating them.
Now, let me go buy some new underwear just in case Martje answers me back.
P.S. It really annoys me how digital agencies never pay attention to the embeddable video players. The shareable player provided was way too large and had no playback controls. If it’s supposed to go viral, how come they don’t make it easy?
