The mission of the image in the context of marketing a medical procedure is usually to imbue confidence and value in the mind of the consumer. In rarer cases, images can be used to convey a dread sense of profound incompetence, a terrible feeling that something is very wrong, and that a long slow descent into a hellish nightmare of pain and regret awaits. …But were afraid to ask. This is the title of this very interesting 34-slide presentation on Google prepared by FaberNovel, a french consulting firm. It is hard to realize the real nature of this just 10 years old giant given the number of services it has continuously released, updated (and sometimes shut down) or acquired.

This presentation gives a great overview of the company’s overall strategy and the reasons it has become what it is today.

It addresses some key questions about the company’s future, presented in the slide above: how Google won’t be affected by the crisis (not so sure about that if you consider their own stock update: the WSJ has a good article about the upcoming downturn), its relation with Microsoft and its advantages on Facebook, its footprint in the infrastructure and mobile world…

There is an interesting slide about how Google buys traffic through key partnership deals with software or hardware companies (slide 14) Many tend to think Google has free traffic or zero marketing costs which is a wrong assumption since it affects directly its P&L

For regular readers, most of this information will not be a surprise. But it is well organized and structured and gives some good prospective. I just wished the presentation was focusing a little more on the Giant’s weaknesses. A TechCrunch France reader funnily commented that, only the absence of electricty could stop them. What we do know on the web is that giants do not stay strong forever. The question is when will the wind change direction for Google?

The Google Calendar team is proud to announce the public release of our support for the CalDAV protocol. You can now use Apple iCal with your Google Calendar, so you can work even when you’re offline, sync almost instantly, respond to invitations from others and see the free/busy data of your friends and coworkers.

We launched CalDAV support to our developers last July for feedback, and since that time a few of us whipped up a nifty setup program for iCal. This tool makes it a breeze to get iCal working with your Google account. We’ve released this as open source and the program is available for download at our Google Code site.

Steffen Rusitschka veröffentliche vor wenigen Tagen die sehr gelungene Mini-Javascriptbibliothek Liquid Canvas zum Erzeugen perfekter runder Ecken an beliebigen HTML-Elementen.

Die Rundungen werden zur Laufzeit über Canvas generiert und automatisch in den HTML-Code eingebettet. Der Einsatz von herkömmlichen Bildbearbeitungsprogrammen wie Gimp, Inkscape oder Photoshop entfällt völlig.

Die Features im Einzelnen:

• automatisches Erzeugen von HTML-Canvas-Elementen, die sich der Größe des HTML-Elements anpassen
• Canvas-Abstraktion - jedes HTML-Element erhält eine paint-Methode
• Plugins zum Rendern können verwendet werden
• etliche Plugins existieren bereits, eigene können ebenso eingebunden werden
• vereinfachte Render-Sprache für Plugin basiertes Rendern
• an CSS angelehnte Syntax der Render-Sprache für die plugin-Formatierung
• nutzt nur HTML, Canvas, jQuery und exCanvas
• funktioniert mit Firefox (2+), Internet Explorer (6+), Safari (3+), Chrome

Minimalistisches Design könnte man mittlerweile als Trend bezeichnen. Ich habe mir gerade die minimalistischen Designs angeguckt, die beim smashingmagazine vorgestellt wurden und frage mich momentan, ob diese Designs ein Fortschritt oder Rückschritt sind. Sind sie effektiver? Kehrt man damit zum Sinn des Internets zurück?

Hier geht es vor allem um eure Meinungen. Also lasst es krachen. Ich freue mich auf eure Kommentare. Meine Meinung erfahrt ihr hier natürlich auch. Außerdem zeige ich hier auch 8 minimalistische Designs. Über Social Bookmarks würde ich mich auch freuen. Vielleicht bekommt man so noch mehr Sichtweisen zusammen.

Meine Meinung

Minimalistische Designs zeichnen sich vor allem durch sehr viel white Space aus und ihre Designer benutzen fast keine Grafiken. Wenn der Webdesigner gut ist, sehen minimalistische Seiten sehr aufgeräumt und professionell aus. Man könnte jetzt so argumentieren: Content is king und minimalistische Designs sind übersichtlich und lenken nicht mit aufwändigen Grafiken vom Inhalt ab.

Egal, ich finde solche Designs trotzdem nicht gut. Sie mögen effektiv sein, aber eine aufwändigere Seite kann noch viel mehr tun, als Inhalt schnell zu vermitteln. Sie sticht aus der Masse heraus und macht das Web interessanter. Stellt euch mal vor, alle würden nur noch einfache Designs online stellen. Dann wäre das Internet optisch fast genauso langweilig wie die meisten Bücher.
